Expect to lose this planet a lot, and rebuild a lot. Don't build anything there that you require to run your economy. If possible, you have yet another planet in front of this one, which you defend kinda-sorta well, and have control of about half the time. But you don't want too many breakthroughs. Anything sufficiently large that breaks through goes into the planet behind it, the air lock, and gets ground up there. Also put forcefields over the wormholes leading from planet to planet, to slow down invaders, on these ones only.Īnyhow, you make this one your primary planet that you fight on the most, and this is hopefully the meat grinder. Then you take the planet in front of it, and fortify the heck out of THAT. You take all 6 planets, and then heavily fortify the planet that is on the "inside" of the bottleneck. Suppose there's a corner of the map with 6 planets and only one entrance. Every AI attack has to come in the "front door," and often it's good to stagger things so that there is a front door, an airlock behind it (so to speak), and an atrium in front of it (I always called that a" whipping boy"). If someone has the skill to play on difficulty X and win with a high AIP, then they are probably a versatile-enough player to play on difficultly X+1 if they were being more conservative with AIP.Īll of that said, LOTS of turrets are a must, having one choke point into your empire is usually a must, and having a giant block of planets that just feed your economy and have only one entrance is a must. In general, I think any advice will partly be along these lines. Utterly breaking the norms of the game, but in a way that made for some great fun for them, and a cool strategic challenge that was really different from what everyone else was doing. So their situation got increasingly dire, and it was basically like playing on difficulty 10 by the time they were halfway through. In the original AI War, I saw two guys play together over 80 hours of gametime, and they played on difficulty 5 and took every planet. The AI response is harsh and interesting, and I have a bit more open warfare. But I always have played on 7, and am more casual about things rather than trying to fully optimize. Most people who play those, from what I have seen, play on a difficulty that is lower than what they should for their skill level.Įssentially, I COULD play on difficulty 8.
